April 24, 2009, Newsletter Issue #303: Surf lifesaving in Australia

1

Tip of the Week

Surf lifesaving
While young people in remote rural areas dream of their first trip to the beach, most Australian kids grow up with the sand between their toes, or embedded in their swimming costumes. Toddlers paddle at the shoreline in floaties, the inflatable armbands that keep them above water.
Around age 6, kids get serious about surf safety. Many join junior surf-lifesaving clubs, known as Nippers, to learn basic swimming and floating skills to keep them safe in rough conditions.
Many teenagers spend their summers patrolling the beaches as lifesavers. Since 1907, the volunteers in their colourful caps have rescued more than 350,000 swimmers.
