Samoan tsunami tragedy

Posted by H. Clare Callow on Sep 30, 2009

Australians are no strangers to tragedy. Our roving nature means that at least a few of us can be found at the site of any world event. While Australia as a country is incredibly lucky to escape ...

Summertime is on its way

Posted by H. Clare Callow on Sep 13, 2009

Yes, it's September. Summer, however, is definitely in the air. Yesterday's reported high in Melbourne was 30°C (which, for those in Farenheit, is 86 degrees, or in other words, hot). While Oz ...

Weather With You

Posted by H. Clare Callow on Jul 23, 2009

I am sitting in London at the moment, and it is raining. Not only is it raining, it is cold. I should perhaps begin this entry by noting that it is supposedly mid-summer (although I doubt anyone has told the weather here about that – ever).

English weather should come as no surprise to any visitor – the Brits certainly complain about it often enough – but it is one of the things that always makes me want to get home as quickly as I can. The weather in Australia isn't always nice, but it's always interesting.

Weather varies quite a lot within Australia, which shouldn't be surprising as it is an incredibly large country. From the often chilly (for Australia) climate of Tasmania to the four-seasons-in-one-day weather in Melbourne, to the tropical rains in the north (where you're drenched in a minute, and dry within the next), weather in Australia is an adventure.

What can I say? I love extreme weather. Last year, I was one of the very few walking about in the snow in Tromso and grinning like an idiot. I am very much looking forward to having to sleep on the floor during the next 40-degree stretch next summer.

Coffee As A Universal Guideline

Posted by H. Clare Callow on Jul 16, 2009

While I am slowly updating all of the information available on this tip site, I am concentrating on providing as much real-life information as possible. As a traveller, I know how vital this can be: there is nothing more daunting than arriving in a new city and realising your planned budget can't even stretch to a cup of coffee.

With that in mind, I am updating the vital statistics of each Aussie state and major city with what I like to call the coffee test. This is just an indication of the average price of a cup of coffee in each area, which should serve as a guide when planning your visit (or just as an interesting tidbit of information).

Why coffee, you may well ask? Well, as a determined coffee drinker, a cup of java is one of the first things I look for when visiting a new city. I've found that coffee prices are a good indication of the cost of living in an area (except Paris, of course). Just for clarification, the coffee mentioned is a medium latte.
