When was tea tree oil developed, and how was it used in the military?

Melaleuca Alternifolia

In 1923, a leading Australian government research scientist and chemist, researching all-natural medicines, conducted a study of the leaves of the tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia) and found that their essential oils possessed numerous healthful benefits. Further studies were conducted and articles were published in the Australian and British medical journals touting pure tea tree oil as a powerful, yet skin friendly antiseptic. It was considered so effective that the Australian military issued tea tree oil in the first aid kits of soldiers during World War II to use as an antiseptic and fungicide. The tea tree oil health benefits were considered so important that producers of the oil were excused from military service.
